HTC One (M7 & M8) to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop
In previous month we have seen a lot of updates related with the Android 5.0 Lollipop. We have seen AOSP ROMs, OmniROM 5.0, AndroidNow HD and the top in the market right now, the CyanogenMod 12. Some of the factory images were leaked for some devices while some even received the Official Firmware. Although most devices were updated via the Custom ROMs, but the main point is that all of them were either the official Android 5.0 Lollipop or 5.0 Lollipop based ROM. What we have seen last night is quite something, that should have been seen on Nexus 6 first and then Nexus 9, than for any other device, but it was seen on HTC One M7 and M8 Google Play Edition.
Android 5.0.1 Lollipop OTA Update was released for GPe edition of HTC One M7 and M8yesterday, yes the Android 5.0.1, not the Android 5.0 Lollipop. Most probably this small change will remove some bugs and enhanced performance. The update is of 511mb and doesn’t feature the HTC Sense like all of the previous Firmwares. If you want to update your HTC One M8 to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, then you’ll need your device to run the Stock ROM and Stock Recovery first, then and only then you’ll be able to flash this file. Early Preparations:
1. This is only for HTC One (M7, M8)!
This custom ROM is only for the device mentioned above. Make sure that your model number matches the one listed above. To do so, go to Settings > About Device on your device and see your model number. Flashing this ROM on any other device will result in bricking it so make sure that you meet this requirement first of all.
2. Battery should be charged at least over 60%
Make sure that your battery is charged enough to complete the flashing process. In case your battery is low and your device goes dead during the flashing process, you may end up soft bricking your device as it won’t complete the flashing process.
3. Backup everything!
Just to be on the safe side, you may consider backing up each and everything from your Android device. This is highly recommended so that in case anything goes wrong, you still have the access to all of your data and you can restore it immediately. You may backup everything as listed below.
- Backup SMS Messages
- Backup Call Logs
- Backup Contacts
- Backup Media – Copy your files manually to your PC or Laptop.
- Titanium Backup – If already rooted, use Titanium Backup to backup all of your apps, system data and other important content.
- Backup Nandroid - If CWM or TWRP installed previously, otherwise skip this step and perform this at the end of flashing.
4. Disclaimer
The methods involved in flashing custom recoveries, roms and rooting your phone are highly custom and may result in bricking your device, and has nothing to do with Google or the device manufacturer that is HTC in our case. How to Install Android 5.0.1 Lollipop:
- First of all make sure that your device is running Stock Recovery.
- Configure Fastboot on your device, How? How to Install Android Adb & Fastboot Drivers on Your Windows PC [Guide].
- Now Connect your device with PC.
- Copy the above downloaded file to the root of your Sdcard.
- Open Command prompt in Fastboot folder and type: adb reboot recovery
- Once in Recovery, Choose Apply Update from Internal Storage
- Navigate to “0” and choose the Zip file.
- Confirm the Installation and Wait for the updater to do its job.
- Once done, reboot your device.
- After a Successful Reboot, Go to Settings > About to verify the Android version.
